If you know anything about golf you will have heard of Glen Abbey Golf Course. Glen Abbey is one of the most famous golf courses in Canada and it’s right here in our beautiful town of Oakville!

History of Glen Abbey Golf Course

Glen Abbey is not the only golf course in Oakville but it is the most famous. It was opened in 1976 and was designed by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus. Today it is home to the Royal Canadian Golfing Association and the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, and it’s particularly well known for its history of hosting Canadian Open Championships. In fact, Glen Abbey has hosted more Canadian Opens than any other course with the first being just the year after it opened, in 1977, and the Open is returning to Glen Abbey for 2013 which is exciting news for the town and its residents!

The Course

Glen Abbey is an 18-hole regulation size golf course that has some spectacular holes! Sixteen Mile Creek is a famous feature of the course and a challenging hazard on a number of the holes. As you tee off from hole 11 you actually go down a cliff into the valley, about 60 feet below. The second shot of this hole has to clear Sixteen Mile Creek to get you to the green. Following this, holes 12, 13 and 14 all use the creek as a hazard, then after an easier hole 15 you come back out of the valley to go the 16th hole.

Hole 18 was also made famous, by Tiger Woods, in the final round of the 2000 Canadian Open. He hit a spectacular shot 218 yards from a bunker right onto the fairway and ended up only around 18 feet from the hole. This shot secured him the title and went down as one of the most impressive shots of recent PGA history, and one of the best of Woods’ career.

Membership

If you’re a golf fan and you’re buying a home in Oakville you’re going to be wondering about memberships at Glen Abbey. After all, who wouldn’t want to play on such a famous course?! Well, Glen Abbey is owned by ClubLink so when you become a member at Glen Abbey you’re also a member of more than 50 championship courses spread throughout Ontario, Quebec, and Florida. However, memberships at Glen Abbey Golf Course are in such high demand that it’s not as simple as just filling out an application and paying your dues, so please contact the club directly for the most up to date information.

Club Facilities

Glen Abbey Golf Course is also renowned in Oakville for its excellent dining and event opportunities. ‘Eighteen at Glen Abbey’ is a fabulous place to dine and it’s open to non-members so anyone who wants to can dine here. During the winter months the restaurant is open but only for groups, so check ahead on opening times before coming.

You might also like the famous Sunday Brunch which is open to the public very Sunday between 11 am and 1 pm where there’s a mouth-watering selection of foods.
